IOC reallocates North Korea’s qualification spots for Tokyo Olympics

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — North Korea’s qualification locations for subsequent month’s Tokyo Olympics have been reallocated on Tuesday after it determined to not attend the Video games, the Worldwide Olympic Committee stated.

North Korea stated in April it will not be attending the Olympics on account of coronavirus considerations, dealing a blow to the IOC’s efforts to have 206 nationwide Olympic committees, together with each North and South Korea, on the Video games in Japan.

“In April they (North Korea) held a common meeting and there was a call on the time,” James Macleod, the IOC’s director of Olympic solidarity, advised a digital information convention.

“The issue was they didn’t inform us formally. We had quite a lot of ongoing discussions on causes and to supply them as many assurances as potential.”

It is going to be the primary time North Korea has missed a summer season Olympics because it boycotted the Seoul video games in 1988.

“We want 206 nationwide Olympic committees to participate within the Video games,” Macleod stated. “It obtained to the purpose the place we needed to decide on the certified locations. So there was a call at this time by the (IOC) govt board.”

“As we speak we wanted to reallocate these 4 locations for equity to the opposite athletes.”

The Olympics have already been postponed by a 12 months and preparations proceed amid international considerations over how organizers can hold volunteers, athletes, officers and the Japanese public protected once they start on July 23 after a fourth wave of infections.
